Stephen Hawking suggests we only have 100 years before the earth is so polluted and climate-challenged that humans will have to decamp to another planet. If so, will we be any better stewards of the new habitat than we've been of our own? If we find beings on the new planet, will we react in an historically "human" manner and slaughter or enslave them? Whatever the decision, it will be our children's children who bear the brunt.
