New World Wailing Wall
New World Wailing Wall
Katrina salvage, steel, concrete, paint, vacant house slab, plastic dry cleaner bags

This installation was created to reanimate the partially repopulated Gentilly (New Orleans) neighborhood and help it attract attention to its continuing struggle to recover from the 2005 flood. Its allusion to the "wall of water" resulting from the levee failure also warns other communities that protective infrastructure everywhere is crumbling. Built on the slab of a former family home, the tiled bathroom floor is still evident. An overhead view of the neighborhood taken from Google Earth was painted in stylized lines on the slab to enable neighbors to locate their own houses when viewing the piece. Sponsored by AORTA Projects and funded by a grant from Transforma/National Performance Network thanks to the generous support of Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.
