Cinderella's Last Stand
Cinderella's Last Stand
Factory salvage, ductwork, rope lights, fabric, shoes

This was a site-specific work for The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, an art center in one of the many brick factory buildings along the Mississippi that are now largely abandoned. Most materials were collected onsite: tarnished, corroded, caked with rust and mud, these are the residue of what was once a thriving manufacturing industry. The deep satisfaction resulting from working with one’s hands and having produced a useful object at day’s end is no longer available to us, yet the folklore persists that we are a nation that makes things. Commercials provide the romantic image of rugged men in work boots and pickup trucks engaged in traditional jobs that no longer exist – almost like a fairy tale.
